AVID is a college and career framework designed to prepare "academic middle" students (typically with 2.0–3.5 GPAs) for college/career eligibility and success. It offers a supportive peer group, tutorials, and instruction in writing, inquiry, collaboration, and organization (WICOR) to boost academic performance in rigorous courses.

Key Components and Offerings of AVID at Henninger High School

  • The AVID Elective Class: A, scheduled class where students learn time management, note-taking process, and organizational skills.
  • WICOR Framework: AVID focuses on Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading to build critical thinking skills.
  • Tutorial Support: Weekly small-group tutorials led by tutors (college/peer students) help students resolve questions from their scheduled classes.
  • Academic Rigor: AVID encourages enrollment in AP, Dual Enrollment, SUPA and CTE courses, providing the support system needed to succeed in them.
  • College and Career Readiness: The program offers guidance on college research, application processes, entrance exams (SAT/ACT), financial aid, and career exploration.
  • Motivational Support: AVID creates a "family" atmosphere, building confidence and fostering a college/career-going culture.
